Dante Rantanen (Riku)
Basics
  • Name: Dante Rantanen
  • Age: 21
Dante is a CRAU taken from [community profile] recolle. Per the constraints of this game, he is a reincarnation of Riku from Kingdom Hearts, having lived throughout all of the events of the KH series, died, and been born again on Earth. As of this point, Dante has remembered approximately half of everything that happened throughout the series to date, with no memories from KH3.
Background Dante Rantanen was one of twin boys born to a pianist and opera singer after a one-night tryst, who promptly got married to avoid a scandal. After a few years, the couple decided to split, separating Dante from his brother--Dante was claimed by his father, who promptly turned around and remarried his publicist (so much for that scandal!). As neither of them thought the tour circuit was suitable for a toddler, Dante was sent to live with his grandmother, who raised him until his 11th birthday, at which point his parents realized how little they knew their son and decided that he was old enough to accompany them on their world travels.

Dante hated it. Thrust into the spotlight suddenly, he was expected to be the perfect son, handed off to tutors and nannies and shuttled off to tourist traps and historical sites he wasn't old enough to appreciate and never in one place often enough to make real friends, seeing his father most often at sound checks and after-events and galas. But Dante grew into the mold given to him, growing from an innocent little boy with an ornery streak into a self-confident (if not downright cocky) young man who thought he had the world at his fingertips. His parents would give him anything he asked for so long as he behaved well around them, and he began skipping out on tutors and other obligations in search of more exciting pursuits.

He began chasing that next high, experimenting with alcohol, drugs, and sex (often with his dad's friends' children), sneaking out with kids his age to bars and getting a fake ID, partying, getting high a few times... and eventually being caught with his new "friends" transporting a couple of paintings that had been recently stolen from the downtown galleries. (Dante was able to claim ignorance and his parents paid very well to make sure the story never broke.) His parents sent him home to his grandma, where he wouldn't be able to get into so much trouble and would be out of the public eye.

To be honest, Dante didn't mind this much. He'd already learned so much from the circuit, and his past gave him a sort of allure at the local high school that he cashed in on, continuing partying and getting involved with street racing... and he liked being back home with his grandmother, who had always made time for him when he called or texted her, who had made him feel safe as a child and continued to be that sort of safe haven even as a young adult (just one with a penchant for dragging him around by the ear scolding him now).

And then she passed away--peacefully, in her sleep, but leaving Dante alone once more.

He finished out the school year and moved to Recolle for college, living in an apartment his parents paid for while calling them once a month or so. And to hear it from him, he was doing just fine.
Recolle Dante went into Recolle a hurt and angry young man who felt as though the world didn't care about him. Almost everybody he'd ever cared about had left him or had been otherwise removed from his life, and his parents didn't seem to care about him as long as he wasn't bringing negative publicity to the family name. He armored himself in sarcasm and worked to give off a "devil-may-care" attitude, trolling everyone he could and maintaining his cool persona. Threadjacking to take advantage of an opportunity to mock somebody introduced him to Prompto Argentum, who would soon become a close friend. Less than two months after being first introduced to Retrospec, Dante had a strong memory of his other self dumped on him. One in which a witch told him that his heart was empty, and that were it not for the darkness there, he would be entirely alone--playing into one of Dante's deepest fears and certainties that he'd be abandoned by everyone around him, that he'd be alone in the end.

Dante panicked and tried to flee the city to run away from his memories, but Prompto refused to let him go without an explanation. Dante refused to give one. This ended in a meetup and a back-alley brawl, where Dante broke Prompto's nose and said the cruelest things he could possibly think of in order to ensure the other boy would leave him alone.

This seemed to be Dante's first turning point. After a few days spent camping in the woods, he came back and confided in Ardyn Izunia his fears and what had happened, as well as the fact that he'd punched Prompto. With Ardyn's support, he apologized to Prompto; the two of them reconciled and became fast friends, eventually using a dagger Dante had been gifted by his girlfriend (Ari/Garnet) to become blood brothers proper. Dante continued to grow closer with Ardyn as well, then met Grell Sutcliff at a gala Ari had organized and Hitori Togusa when a contact from his younger days tried to enlist his help robbing a museum. He organized a massive party for college-aged Retrospeccers at an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town, organized a sort of "fight club" when it became apparently that several network members were remembering how to use various types of weapons, and explored the Retrospec headquarters at least once a month. (Later, Dante would try to camp out in the main lobby overnight. He was awoken quite abruptly in the middle of the night when disembodied hands grabbed him and forcefully threw him out onto the sidewalk and locked the door behind him.)

Six months after the network kicked on for the first time, Dante was pulled out of reality alongside a number of other Retrospec users. For three weeks the nine of them ventured outside of reality, first exploring a series of abandoned ice caves, then a swamp, and finally an old manor lovingly referred to by the characters as Hell Manor. The name was well-earned: Dante saw one of their teammates' souls forcibly separated from his body (despite his best efforts to ensure it happened to him instead; he hauled said teammate's body around the rest of the time they were in the manor), was attacked by Freya (Fang) when she was possessed by an angry ghost and then was possessed himself, and was powerless to stop the death of another teammate when they managed to escape back into reality.

Dante's failures in the mansion, along with the memories of Ansem he was beginning to regain, meant that he suffered a lot of mental anxiety and stress in the latter half of the month--thankfully, with Ardyn, Grell, Prompto, Togusa, and a few other close friends, he was able to begin processing it and healing. At this point he began to actually believe that these people saw him as their chosen family, and that he could reach out to them for help whenever he needed it.

As time continued to pass, Dante continued to grow--he realized that the life he was constantly remembering was affecting him, but was still noticeably him. By the end of his time in Recolle, Dante was on his way to becoming someone he could be proud to be, even if he didn't think he was there yet.
Important Relationships Family:
  • Ardyn Izunia: Lawdad. Stated outright that he thought of Dante as a son (despite their age difference only being 15ish years). Struggled a lot with his own darkness, but that just allowed the two of them to connect more.
  • Grell Izunia (Sutcliff): Murdermom. Dante adores Grell; she somehow stepped in to be a maternal figure to him where he'd been lacking one his entire life (his grandma was different).
  • Prompto Argentum: Blood brothers. They've been with each other through thick and thin, from Dante's drop out of reality to accidentally setting Prompto on fire and (intentionally) breaking his nose.
  • Hitori Togusa: Copdad. Copbro? Dante's not really sure where Togusa is on this scale, but he's family. He's the straight man to the rest of their shenanigans, but he's always right there along with them.
  • Noctis Lucis Caelum: Originally just Prompto's best friend, Noctis and Dante connected in their own right and the three of them together were... well, a typical pack of 20/21-year-old boys. It was probably good for him.
Friends:
  • Vera Weiss: An heiress, and one of his best friends. They both understood the stresses of their upbringings and being little more than a living doll for their parents' desires.
  • Ari Alessandro: The one and only serious girlfriend Dante ever had. To this day he still carries the dagger she gave him after a night of shameless jokes about him being the knight to her princess.
  • Freya Yun: Brash, blunt, and capable. The two of them are cut from the same cloth, even though they came from very different worlds--they understand each other and, in spite of the armor they wear to the world, confide in each other.
  • Tatsuo Kihara: One of Recolle's CSIs, the two of them have an odd relationship--friends, perhaps, Dante isn't quite sure. But a good guy that he can confide in.
  • Leo Valdez: Do not let these two plot together. What morons. What fools. Dante thought they were related for a little while--thanks Retrospec.
  • James "Bucky" Barnes: Please do not let Dante corrupt you, James. Too late.

CONTENT WARNINGS & OPT-OUT
Dante comes with a large laundry list of potential content warnings, including: Underage drinking (though he's of age now), drugs (mostly just weed), abuse, possession, kidnapping, torture, and death. Though most of these (with the exception of alcohol and possibly weed) will probably not appear for a while if ever, I am more than happy to avoid any or all of these topics at your request! Please drop me a comment (comments screened) if you have anything you would like me to avoid (even if it's not on this list).

Similarly, Dante may not be for everyone. If you decide you'd prefer not to have anything to do with him at all, drop me a comment (comments screened) and I will avoid tagging you.

[darkness permissions]

darkness permissions
"How is it that you found me when you were there in the light?"
"You reek of darkness--even the light can't block the smell. I guess I followed the darkness right to you."

Throughout Kingdom Hearts, one of Riku's biggest struggles is in learning to accept the darkness that resides inside of him, and learning how to use it to his own advantage without losing himself to it entirely. While there are a number of different things he can utilize the darkness for, one of the most passive uses is that he can sense the darkness in other people. (Chain of Memories describes it as being like a scent, while most other games seem to ignore that aspect of it.)

As of 10/14, Dante will be regaining this ability, which means that he'll be able to sense the darkness on player characters and notice if people are more affected by it or less, or if someone's heart is struggling with dark feelings ("dark," for the purpose of Kingdom Hearts, referring to negative emotions such as anger, spite, hatred, jealousy, etc. Sadness can make one more susceptible to the darkness, but doesn't seem to be the source of any).

Of course, I don't want Dante to start jumping around metagaming and calling out people for the darkness inside of them without player permission! So this is where you come in. Please c/p the below form and leave me a comment here to let me know if you're all right with Dante being able to sense darkness in your character(s), and how much he'd be able to sense! Feel free to update these comments as often as necessary with new developments, and don't worry--if something's going to go into a heavy discussion about the darkness, I'll still touch base to see if you're okay with it first :) this is mostly for metatext purposes.

Thanks, guys! ♥

dante's timeline

timeline (as told by dante)

-- memories --

Sora: So, *****'s home is out there somewhere, right?
Riku: Could be. We'll never know by staying here.
Sora: But how far could a raft take us?
Riku: Who knows? If we have to, we'll think of something else.
Kairi: So, suppose you get to another world. What would you do there?
Riku: Well, I haven't really thought about it. It's just... I've always wondered why we're here on this island. If there are any other worlds out there, why did we end up on this one? And suppose there are other worlds... Then ours is just a little piece of something much greater. So we could've just as easily ended up somewhere else, right?
Sora: I don't know.
Riku: Exactly. That's why we need to go out there and find out. Just sitting here won't change a thing. It's the same old stuff. So let's go.
Kairi: You've been thinking a lot lately, haven't you?
Riku: Thanks to you. If you hadn't come here, I probably would've never thought of any of this. *****, thanks.
Kairi: You're welcome.

Riku: Hey! Aren't you guys forgetting about me? So, I guess I'm the only one working on the raft.
(He tosses the log to Sora, who falls over with a yelp, and walks over to Kairi)
Riku: And you're just as lazy as he is!
Kairi (giggling): So you noticed. Okay, we'll finish it together. I'll race you!
Sora: Huh?
Riku: What, are you kidding?
Kairi (giggling): Ready? Go!

Sora: Where’s *****? I thought she was with you!
Riku: The door has opened...
Sora: What?
Riku (facing Sora): The door has opened, Sora! Now we can go to the outside world!
Sora: What are you talking about? We’ve gotta find *****!
Riku (abruptly): *****'s coming with us!
(Sora looks shocked)
Riku: Once we step through, we might not be able to come back. We may never see our parents again. There’s no turning back. But this may be our only chance. We can’t let fear stop us! I’m not afraid of the darkness!
(He holds out a hand toward Sora)
Sora (uneasily): ****...
(A pool of darkness forms at Riku’s feet, its tendrils licking at where he stands, wrapping around his impassive body. Sora rushes forward to save his friend, and the darkness grabs at him. He tries to reach toward Riku, but the weight of the darkness pulls him down. Riku’s face is unchanging as Sora fails to grab his hand, the darkness proving too much for him.)

Riku: How about it, Sora? Let’s join forces to save her. We can do it, together. ...What? You’d rather fight me? Over a puppet that has no heart?
Sora: Heart or no heart, at least he still has a conscience.
Riku: Conscience?
Sora: You might not hear it, but right now it’s loud and clear. And it’s telling me you’re on the wrong side!

Hades: That smarmy vizier could’ve had ‘em—if someone had stuck around to give him a hand.
Riku: Hey, I did my part. I brought the princess, didn’t I?
Maleficent: Jafar was beyond help, consumed by his own hatred. One should beware of letting it burn too fiercely.
Hades: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Lighten up. I’m as cool as they come, okay? By the way, kid, have we got something special for you.
Riku: Huh?
Maleficent: We had a deal, yes? You help us, and we grant you your wish...
Riku: *****!
Maleficent: Go to her. Your vessel is waiting.
Hook: Just remember, this is no pleasure cruise. It won’t be a pleasant voyage.
Riku: Why are you doing all this for me? What’s the catch?
Maleficent (turning to face him): Catch? What’s the catch?
(She bends down to him, placing a hand on his cheek)
Maleficent: Silly boy. You’re like a son to me. I only want you to be happy.
(He knocks her hand away)
Riku: I seriously doubt that.
Maleficent: Believe what you wish. But lest we forget, I kept my end of the bargain.

Riku: I didn’t think you’d come, Sora. Good to see you again.
Sora: Where are ****** and *****?
Riku: Are they that important to you? More important than old friends? Instead of worrying about them, you should be asking... about her.
Sora: *****!
Riku: That’s right. While you were off goofing around, I finally found her.
????: Not so fast. No shenanigans aboard my vessel, boy.
Sora: ****, why are you siding with the Heartless?
Riku: The Heartless obey me now, Sora. Now I have nothing to fear.
Sora: You’re stupid. Sooner or later they’ll swallow your heart.
Riku: Not a chance. My heart’s too strong.
Sora: ****...
Riku: I’ve picked up a few other tricks as well. Like this, for instance.
(He summons Anti-Sora.)
Riku: You can go see your friends now.
(A trapdoor opens underneath him and he falls through)
Riku (to the captain): Let’s get under way, already. And keep Sora away from ***** until we’re ready to land.

Riku: So, you finally made it. About time. I’ve been waiting for you. We’ve always been rivals, haven’t we? You’ve always pushed me as I’ve always pushed you.
Sora: ****...
Riku: But it all ends here. There can’t be two Keyblade masters.
Sora: What are you talking about?
Riku: Let the Keyblade choose... its true master!
Sora & Goofy: Huh?
Donald: What!?
Riku: Maleficent was right. You don’t have what it takes to save *****. It’s up to me. Only the Keyblade master can open the secret door...
(He holds the blade high)
Riku: ...and change the world.
Sora: But that’s impossible. How did this happen? I’m the one who fought my way here with the Keyblade!
Riku: You were just the delivery boy.
(He dispels the blade and pulls out a wooden sword)
Riku: Sorry, your part’s over now. Here, go play hero with this.

Sora: *****! (rushes over; gently shaking her): *****! *****, open your eyes!
Riku: It’s no use. That girl has lost her heart. She cannot wake up.
Sora: What? You... You’re not ****.
Riku: The Keyhole cannot be completed so long as the last princess of heart still sleeps.
Sora (looking down at her): The princess...? *****'s a princess?
Riku: Yes, and without her power, the Keyhole will remain incomplete. It is time she awakened.
Sora: Whoever you are, let **** go! Give him back his heart!
Riku: But first, you must give the princess back her heart.

[Battling Sora in Hollow Bastion while being possessed by Ansem]

(A corridor of darkness appears and a tall man with silver hair and orange eyes steps out)
Ansem: So, you have awakened at last, Princess. The Keyhole is now complete. You have served your purpose. But now it’s over.
(He walks slowly towards Kairi, and Donald and Goofy brandish their weapons)
Donald: Don’t make another move!
Goofy (to Donald): Do you think we can stop him all by ourselves?
Donald: I don’t know!
(As he approaches, he stops, struggling to move his own body)
Ansem: Impossible...
(He grunts, a prisoner in his own body. An image of Riku appears before him, facing the other three)
Riku: No. You won’t use me for this!
(Riku holds out his arms, blocking Ansem from proceeding further but also shielding them from him)
Kairi: ****!
Riku: You’ve got to run! The Heartless are coming!

Riku: Sora... *****... I’m sorry...
Riku: Is this the afterworld? ...I’m not ready. Not yet. Not until I see Sora and ***** one last time...
Mickey: ****, can you hear me? I’ll be there soon.
Riku: Who is that?
Mickey: I have the other Keyblade—the one that belongs to this world. I’ve been trying to get through to you, but the darkness in your heart kept me away.
Riku: Who are you? What’s happened to me?
Mickey: Your heart won the battle against the darkness, but it was too late for your body. That’s why you’re here—in this place of darkness where hearts are gathered.
Riku: So what do I do?
Mickey: The Door of Darkness will open soon, but it’s a door we can’t enter. It has to be closed from both sides. To do this, you need two keys and two hearts. Maybe you’re here for the same reason I am. Maybe it was fate.
Riku: Fate, huh? You seem to know everything, don’t you? Then tell me: are Sora and ***** okay?
Mickey: Don’t you feel the echoes of their hearts? You already know the answer. Look inside your own heart.
(Riku opens his eyes)
Riku: Thank you.

[Fighting shadows in the realm of darkness]

Donald & Goofy: The Heartless!?
Donald: Hurry!
Sora: I can’t...
Riku: Don’t give up! Come on, Sora! Together, we can do it!
Sora: Okay!
Donald: It’s hopeless!
Donald & Goofy: Huh? Your Majesty!
(King Mickey takes out a Keyblade with golden blade and silver handle, raising it into the air)
Mickey: Now, Sora! Let’s close this door for good!
Donald: Close it, quick!
Sora: But...
Mickey: Don’t worry. There will always be a door to the light.
Goofy: Sora, you can trust King Mickey.
Riku (whirling around towards Mickey): Now! They’re coming!
Mickey (sincerely): ******, *****, thank you.
Riku: Take care of her.

Riku: Everything is just how I remember it. Even this room...
Voice: It must be nice being back in your old bedroom. Think of all the memories...
Riku: You again. Sorry, but these memories I could do without. Maleficent gave me this room.
Voice: So she did. And you lived here, tempted by the darkness she offered. You cast away your home, your friends, everything... But at least they gave you a nice room.
Riku: Stop talking!

Riku: No one here, either... There's nothing but Heartless in this castle.
(He jumps down to the lower level)
Riku: Voice! I know you're watching--so explain this! Where are the people from my memories?
Voice: Do you want to see them?
Riku: Of course I do.
Voice: But you cast them aside.
Riku: What?
Voice: You dreamt of the outside world, and you passed through the door to darkness. Behind you, you left family, friends, home--everything--all in pursuit of darkness.
Riku: But I cast that aside, too!
Voice: And what do you have to show for it? First your home, then the dark. Your heart only knows how to cast away. It's empty--like that room. Like your memories. That's why you don't meet anyone. Your heart is hollow--except for the residual darkness.
Riku: You're wrong! I rejected the darkness!
Voice: Ha ha ha... Did you really, now?

Riku: Of all the people I could run into, it had to be you.
Maleficent: But of course. After all, your heart is steeped in darkness. You can only see those who exist in that same darkness...
Riku: No...
Maleficent: Be grateful you have someone to keep you company. Your heart is empty. Were it not for the darkness it contains, you would be completely alone.

Riku: That scent... You're another one of those "Nobodies."
Lexaeus: You've done well thus far. But to possess your powers, and yet fear darkness... What a waste.
Riku: I do not... fear it!
Lexaeus: I sense that you do. You're also capable of controlling the darkness. Cast away your useless fear. Open your heart. Embrace the darkness.
Riku: And if I say no?
Lexaeus: Then you lose both light and darkness--and disappear!
(Lexaeus surrounds himself with a red and black aura. Riku struggles against the pressure released from the aura)
Lexaeus: I, *******, will not yield to the frail heart--of an infantile coward! Now, stop resisting--and let the darkness in!
(Riku and Lexaeus fight. After the battle, both of them are exhausted)
Riku: You're finished!
Lexaeus: Don't mock me!
[ceiling smash whoops]

Mickey: But please don't forget. Even in the darkest darkness, there's always a little bit of light.
Riku: Light within darkness...
Mickey: You and I have seen it. The far welcoming light inside the door to darkness... The light of Kingdom Hearts--it will show you the way. Please don't give up. Believe in the light. That's a request from my heart.
Riku: Okay... I'll do my best.
Mickey: Trust me. I'll try to find a way to reach you. I'll get there, I promise.
(Mickey reaches out his hand. Riku tries to shake it, but his hand passes right through Mickey's hand)
Riku: You're an illusion...
Mickey: Don't worry. We shook hands in our hearts, remember? We're connected, you and me.
Riku: Guess we are.

Riku: Huh?! What are you supposed to be?
Riku Replica: Surprised? I guess you should be. After all, I look just like you. I'll tell you what I am. I'm an exact replica of you that ***** made from your data.
Riku: So you're a fake me.
Riku Replica: Not a "fake"! I don't care if you're "real"! You're not better! We share the same body and the same talents. But there is one easy way to tell us apart, though! [points at] Unlike you, I fear nothing.
Riku: Are you calling me a coward?
Riku Replica: You're afraid of the dark! The darkness inside you still frightens you, no matter what you say. But I'M different. I embrace the darkness. I can make it do whatever I want. (The replica changes into Dark Mode and summons Soul Eater) So... I can wipe the floor with you!
(The two Rikus battle. After the battle, the replica is laying on one knee)
Riku: Hey, Fake. I thought I heard you say you were gonna wipe the floor with me.

Ansem: ****... ****...
Riku: Who's there?
Ansem: I know you can feel it... The grip that I have on your heart.
(Riku gasps and touches his heart)
Ansem: You have let in the darkness, ****. That means very soon your heart shall become an all-consuming darkness.
Riku: I'm not like that now!
Ansem: Yes, you are.
(There is a flash, and Riku freezes)
Riku: Can't move!
(Darkness starts to rise out of Riku)
Ansem: The deeper the darkness runs inside you, the stronger I become. Controlling you is effortless.
(Mickey's sphere appears and fuses into Riku's heart. Everything is consumed in light)
Ansem: Ugh... Must you interfere again?!
(Riku regains control of himself. He tries to catch his breath)
Mickey: Phew! Sure glad I made it in time! Heh! That oughta keep Ansem busy for a while.
Riku: Huh?
Mickey: Sorry I couldn't come here sooner, ****.
Riku: Your Majesty, is it you?
Mickey: Uh-huh! Whoa! That tickles!
Riku: This time, you're not an illusion. I'm so glad that you could make it here.
Mickey: I made a promise to you that I would find a way, didn't I? Oh!
(Riku drops to the floor)
Riku: Ahh.. I'm okay. Don't worry. Guess I'm just relieved. I've--I've been alone so long that having someone else around is... is a little... overwhelming. But... uh, how did you make it here? I thought it was too far.
Mickey: I found a card to help me.
(He takes out a card of Twilight Town)
Mickey: I needed a way outta the realm of darkness, and then suddenly, this card appeared right in front of me. When I picked it up, I could see your heart beyond the darkness. That's what let me find you. I guess the card thought its place was to be with you.
Riku: Maybe... you're right.

[Naminé rearranging Sora's memories and explaining to him what she'd done]

[Leaving Castle Oblivion]

[Trying to infiltrate Organization XIII's ranks]

[Jumping from Memory's Skyscraper and catching Oblivion as it's thrown at him]

(Roxas attacks Riku. After a powerful and emotional battle, Roxas stands over Riku, who is sitting on the ground.)
Riku: Why!? Why do you have the Keyblade?
(Roxas looks at the Oathkeeper, but shakes it off)
Roxas: Shut up!
(Roxas attacks Riku, but Riku knocks him away, the Keyblade tossed from his hand. Riku walks up to the body of Roxas and slams his Keyblade into the ground. He stands there for a moment. He gasps as Roxas struggles to get up, using the Oblivion for support. He stands and pulls it out of the ground, running at Riku, who shoots a Dark Firaga spell at him. Roxas blasts through the spell and lunges at Riku, who jumps away)
Roxas: Why don't you quit?
(Roxas summons both Keyblades and runs to strike him again. Riku dodges the first attack, but misses to block the second one and gets hit in the arm. He hears a voice:)
Xion: ****, please! You have to stop him!
Roxas: How many times do I have to beat you?
(Riku struggles to stand, holding his arm weakly)
Riku: All right. You've left me with no other choice.
Roxas: What?
Riku: I have to release the power in my heart--
(He stands and takes off his blindfold, letting it fall to the ground)
Riku: The dark power that I've been holding back.

DiZ: His progress is astounding.
?????: So what happened?
DiZ: ******'s encounter with ***** put his heart in contact with *****'s. And that, in turn, affected Sora. You see?
?????: ******? ...She's a wonder.
DiZ: She wasn't born like other Nobodies. She can interfere with the hearts and memories of Sora and those aligned with him.
?????: But whose Nobody is she?
DiZ: I could tell you... But first, perhaps you could tell me your true name?
(The cloaked man revealed his face from under his hood)
?????: It's Ansem.
(DiZ laughs)
DiZ: It's an honor, Ansem!

[Tailing Axel from The World That Never Was with Pluto as he goes to Destiny Islands...]

Kairi: Maybe...waiting isn't good enough.
Axel: My thoughts exactly! If you have a dream, don't wait. Act. One of life's little rules. Got it memorized?
(Axel appears near the water)
Kairi: Who are you?
Axel: ****. I happen to be an acquaintance of Sora's. Why don't we go see him?
(Axel holds out his hand)
Kairi: ...Sora?
(Pluto barks, snapping Kairi back to reality. The dog bounds over and barks, spinning in circles and wagging his tail. Dusks surround them and Pluto snarls. They hear a whistle and a portal opens. Pluto leaps towards it, stops, and turns around. He barks at Kairi)
Axel: We've got something in common, *****. You and I both miss someone we care about. Hey, I feel like we're friends already.
(The Dusks are closing in on her.)
Kairi: You're not acting very friendly!
(Kairi runs into the portal, and she and Pluto arrive in a strange abyss with Nobody symbols in every direction.)
Kairi: Hey, what is this place?

[Riku whistles, directing Pluto toward a bright doorway. Pluto runs through, but as Kairi follows him she looks back and catches a glimpse of him in his Organization getup.]

(Kairi takes a few steps back and leaps over the railing and off the ledge. She hits the ground running and the Shadows overtake her)
Kairi: Sora--!
(There's a flash of light and the Heartless covering Kairi disappear, and she's taken by the arm of Ansem, who hands her a Keyblade)
Ansem: Take it.
(Kairi takes the Keyblade in her hand)
Kairi: This time... I'LL fight. You know Sora's completely hopeless without us! C'mon, ****!

Riku: Sora, don't chase the dreams. They'll lead you nowhere, just to an abyss you'll never be able to wake up from.
(The image of Sora dissolves into an image of Memory's Skyscraper, the Dark City appearing and disappearing around him)
Riku: What? What's going on in Sora's world? Why won't he open his eyes? Is he still in the nightmare?
Ansem: That is right.
Riku: Ansem!
Ansem: Sora can no longer wake up. No matter how many nightmares you consume, you cannot wake someone who has fallen into the chasm of dreams.
Riku: What?
Ansem: Dreams hold our memories. Sleep holds our dreams. And darkness--it holds our sleep. Sora's heart belongs to the darkness now.

Mickey: I should've seen it, as soon as Maleficent started gathering the seven princesses of heart.
Master Xehanort: Yes. They were all my doing. I used the evil fairy to find seven pure lights for me, just as I prepared thirteen vessels to fill with pure darkness.
Riku: But you failed. Sora stopped you in your tracks on both counts.
Master Xehanort: Yes, he did. That dull, ordinary boy--a Keyblade wielder so unlike any I have ever seen. However, I have not abandoned my ambitions--the seven guardians of light and the thirteen seekers of darkness.
Mickey: Seven guardians of light? Well, for Keyblade wielders, there's me and Riku and Sora. And my three missing friends, that's six. Then the seventh would be...
(He gasps, looking around at the thrones)
Mickey: That means...the thirteen seekers of darkness...
Master Xehanort: Yes, little king. Perceptive. But Sora and another on your list belong to me now. And that puts you three guardians short. But worry not. All of the pieces are destined to appear. Your seven lights just like my thirteen darknesses, whose final clash will beget the prize I seek--
(Master Xehanort stands on his throne and summons his Keyblade)
Master Xehanort: But first, the thirteen darknesses shall be united. All the seats have been filled. And now the last vessel shall bear my heart like the rest!
(He waves his hand and Sora's throne rises higher)
Mickey: No!
Riku: Sora!
(They run toward Sora. Mickey jumps, using the other thrones to get to him, but Xemnas slams him against one as Riku is knocked to the ground by Ansem. Sora's throne reaches Master Xehanort's height and he laughs quietly. He holds up his Keyblade, waving his hand over it. It pulses with red energy and he raises it high. With a swift motion, he points it at Sora. Mickey and Riku watch helplessly as a glowing heart speeds toward Sora from the end of Master Xehanort's Keyblade. It nearly reaches Sora before there is an explosion)
Mickey: He made it!
Xemnas: You!
(In a flurry of flames, Lea stands on the throne, holding a lifeless Sora in one hand and his weapon in the other)

(Riku flies into the keyhole and awakes in Yen Sid's tower, surrounded by Mickey, Lea, and Yen Sid)
Mickey: ****!
(He sits up suddenly)
Riku (calling): Sora!
Sora: Hey, Donald! Come on, you're hogging it all!
(Behind him, Sora sits at a table filled with desserts)
Donald: Aw, calm down, Sora, and drink your tea.
Goofy: Gawrsh, it sure is yummy!
Riku: Hey!
(Sora turns around, wearing a party hat and fake mustache glasses. He takes them off and greets his friend)
Sora: ****... You're safe! ****!
(He jumps onto Riku and laughs)

[flying motorbike sidecar battle why is this my canon]

[Fighting Xemnas alongside Sora]

Sora: We did it!
Riku (as Nobodies appear): I wouldn't be too sure of that.
(They ready themselves for the battle. The hundreds of Nobodies are eventually defeated. Riku falls to his knees)
Riku: Sora... I can't...
Sora: Don't say another word! It's not over. It's just not.
(Sora puts Riku's arm over his shoulder and helps him up)
Riku: How can you say that? Even if we could go on... look where we are.
Sora: Aw, c'mon, Riku. You've been hanging out in darkness too long. You gotta try and think positive!
Riku: Sora?
Sora: Hm?
Riku: You lead.
Sora: Got it.
(They start walking, anywhere, just walking)
Riku: You know... I always figured I was better at stuff than you.
Sora: Really?
Riku: Are you mad?
Sora: No. I kinda always thought you were better at everything, too.
Sora: Riku--look. What's that light?
(They walk into the light.)

Riku: End of the road?
Sora: Yep.
Riku: Put me down. I can walk.
(Sora helps him stand and walks to the water)
Sora: You know... maybe the darkness has gotten to me, too.
(He turns around and sees Riku lying on the ground)
Sora (running back): Riku!
Riku (kneeling): This world is perfect for me. If this is what the world really is... just this, then maybe I should fade back into darkness.
Sora: Riku...
Riku: If the world is made of light and darkness... We'll be the darkness.
Sora: Yeah. The other side... the realm of light is safe now. Kairi, the King, and the others are there.
Riku: That's what I mean. Hey, Sora... Could you help me? I want to get down to the water.
(Sora nods and helps Riku up)
Riku (as they walk to the water): At least the waves sound the same.
(They sit on the waterside for a time)
Riku: What I said back there... about thinking I was better at stuff than you... To tell you the truth, Sora... I was jealous of you.
Sora: What for?
Riku: I wished I could live life the way you do. Just following my heart.
Sora: Yeah, well, I've got my share of problems, too.
Riku: Like what?
Sora: Like... wanting to be like you.
Riku: Well, there is one advantage to being me... Something you could never imitate.
Sora: Really? What's that?
Riku: Having you for a friend.
Sora: Then I guess... I'm okay the way I am. I've got something you could never imitate too.
(They look up at the starless sky and close their eyes, feeling the breeze on their skin and hearing the sound of the waves.)

Sora: ****... C'mon, man! Why did you try to do so much on your own? You got friends...like us!
Riku: Have you forgotten? I'll tell you why. 'Cause I'm not a total sap like you.
Sora: Say that again!

Riku: Nothing's changed, huh?
Sora: Nope. Nothing will.
Riku: What a small world.
Sora: But part of one that's much bigger.
Riku: Yeah.
Sora: Hey ****... what do you think it was--the door to the light?
(Riku points to his heart)
Riku: This.
Sora: This?
Riku: Yeah. It's always closer than you think.
Kairi: Sora! ****!
Sora: Hey, what's up?
Kairi: Look.
Sora: From the King?
(Sora takes it from her, dumps the message out, and they read it)

-- recollé --

  • February: Got the app.

  • March: Regained first memory of losing his heart to the darkness with Maleficent taunting him. Remembered how to fight! Ran away to the woods for four days after punching Prompto out to escape. Came back and ran into Ardyn, who sat him down and talked with him about everything that had happened and his worries about what the memories meant.

  • April: Apologized to Prompto, attended and played piano at the gala set up by Ari, and met Grell for the first time. Ran into an old acquaintance of his looking for help with a robbery and intended on sabotaging the attempt for failure, but was busted by the cops for trespassing before he had the opportunity. Went through a lot of questioning and pissed a lot of people off.

  • May: Dragged for his parents sending him away over the network, defended by Ardyn, Noah, and Togusa. Shrunken down to 6" tall by Retrospec, explored the subways with Ardyn and Togusa, and regained his ability to summon and fight with Soul Eater.

  • June: Accidentally set Prompto on fire. Set up fight club, became blood brothers with Prompto, explored the tunnels again, and crashed the ghost hunting expedition alongside Leo and Malik.

  • July: Bingo! Met Noctis for the first time, set up a stand to sell slaps for people's bingo cards (and learned that Ardyn considers him a son), spent a day at the beach with his newfound family (Ardyn, Grell, Togusa, Prompto, and Dante), and made a mistake. Roped into helping Prompto with photography at the ReConvention, where monsters attacked...

  • August: Remembered a tandem attack he and Sora had used before and fought alongside several people before being carried off through a portal that dumped him into a set of mines with Team Snow White. Explored the mines, killed a yeti, explored a swamp, killed a man-eating plant, and suffered through mansion hell alongside the rest of his team. Forced into playing Family Feud by a ghostly butler that ended in Toushiro's death, lost all of his regains, fought a deadly nursemaid ghost. Possessed by a ghost and nearly killed Ritsu and was nearly killed by a possessed Freya. Managed to make it back to the city with the team, only to find Ryoji dead when they arrived. After the battle to restore the city, deepened the bonds between himself and Ardyn, Grell (now his mother even if neither of them have said as much), and Prompto--a family.

  • September: The aftermath of August. Learned that Ari had forgotten the two of them ever dating and talked with a lot of people at their insistence--Togusa (copdad), Tatsuo, Vera, Pen, Freya, and so on. Kicked Mafuyu out of fight club and the following week, took a couple broken ribs and a broken arm from Cleo in order to protect Tatsuo from being injured. Dangled Malik upside down off the warehouse roof for being an idiot, and learned to see in the deepest darkness. Still struggling and suffering from nightmares, but in a much better place than the end of August.

  • October: Nightmares and fog--saw Togusa's nightmare about Dante, Prompto, and Noctis turning on and shooting each other; saw a throne room in Ardyn's nightmares and fought a daemon alongside him; shared several nightmares of his own with others, and was kidnapped by Dark Malik for a weekend torture party where he came very close to actually dying. Spent several days in the hospital recuperating, healed by Ardyn, Freya, and Elliot. Although physically he's fine now, mentally he's still got a lot to process.

  • November: Hibernated? Group Thanksgiving and trashed lawdad's office.

  • December: Learned that he, in Ansem's form, gave Marina a Keyblade in their past lives. Christmas with friends, and shortly after started receiving word from friends that someone strange had come into town and was demanding information about him...

  • January: Dealt with the fallout of finding out that his twin brother had shown up in the city. Revisited the subways with Togusa and Ardyn and dealt with the realization that Recollé was locked down tight, trapped in some sort of dome.

  • February: Ventured outside the city with a large group to Bosuma, where they befriended a bunch of dryads and traced dark magic through a system of ley lines. Met the Huntsman that travels these woods, hunting down a large monster and killing it alongside her and her centaur friend. As the month came to a close, the party received more information on the city and the reconstruction project.

  • March: Kind of hid away from everybody, really.

  • April: Started to try and pull himself out of his funk. Tried to help Malik, which led to him and Bakhura discussing the feeling of being on your own against the world, and talked with Freya and Vera about how things are progressing. Took the first step toward mending a rocky relationship with Sora as the two of them try to reconcile their past lives with their current ones.

[cr chart]

Ardyn Izunia
daemonized
lawdad
one of the people dante trusts most in his life. though their relationship started out as mutual (congenial) antagonism in the classroom, ardyn has consistently and constantly shown a concern for dante and his well-being, even when dante would prefer he didn't. but that's what family means, right? caring about and looking out for each other no matter what's going on?

Grell Izunia
erythristic
murdermom
the one person dante might trust more than ardyn. he loves grell more than he really understands and in a way he doesn't understand at all; she makes him feel like it doesn't matter what he does because even if he disappoints her she'll still care about him unconditionally (but he really doesn't want to disappoint her, either). she gives him something he never realized he craved so much, someone he can come to at any hour of the day whether he needs help or advice or just to escape from the world for a little while.

Hitori Togusa
standalonehuman
copdad
a complicated relationship, because while togusa's a cop, he's also shown time and time again that dante can trust and rely on him no matter what's happening. togusa has put dante before his job training, and that... that means a lot. if there's anything dante can't bring to ardyn or grell, then for a certainty he can bring it to togusa and ask for his advice or help.

Prompto Argentum
mercurio
blood brothers
one of dante's closest friends, and one of the first people to show him that his friendship was worth fighting for (literally). even in the midst of everything else going on in the city, he and prompto can hang out, kick back, relax, and enjoy just living and being dumb young men making stupid decisions and loving life.

Vera Weisz ⚔ Weiss Schnee
heiroglyphs
a sister by this point
he looks at her like a younger sister, even though technically she's probably older than him. the two of them understand each other innately, having been brought up by the same sort of absent parents, though dante at least had his grandmother for a while to make up for his parents' failings. vera never had that, and so dante tries to look out for her and help her navigate the normal world. they're each other's safe haven, a special kind of bond.

Noah Campbell ☠ Allen Walker
redarm
ari's cousin and a pain in dante's ass and that's about all there is to say about that (except for how the two of them have somehow wound up looking out for each other, how did he get a little brother he never asked for this but if anyone tries to mess with him they'd better watch out)

Dylan Walker ≡ Riku Replica
naught_again
double trouble
dante's twin brother, come home (home?) from australia. dante doesn't know what to make of him, considering how much he seems to want nothing to do with/resents him, but what can he do? turn his back on his own blood? he doesn't know what to do or how to approach dylan, and their relationship suffers for it

Shiori Pu'uwai 🞬 Roxas
missingache
sora's brother, still needs a sense of humor tbh the two of them are gonna end up fighting one of these days and it's not gonna be dante that's face down at the end of it

Sora Pu'uwai ♕ Sora
destiny_key
so many mixed emotions--they're friends, right? or at least they were, before everything happened between their other selves... but he does't know if he wants to have that relationship in this world or not

Terra Mason 🗝 Terra
lingeringwill
ctrl+h blue with gray suck it dude i've got blue eyes still and you don't
also he's apparently got a keyblade so that's a thing maybe we should start a club keyblades anonymous or something

Eren Jaeger
titanize
still needs to take a chill pill like seriously

Pen Raban ⚛ Penelo
mincingminuet
the only issue he has with pen is the fact that when she looks at him he's pretty sure she sees more than he wants him to and that's both unnerving and not cool because come on pen let him at least pretend he's cool... she's helped him out of a few tough places though and seems to care about him, so that's kind of nice to know

Freya Yun ⚚ Oerba Yun Fang
show_no_fear
"it happened once in a dream" if she weren't gay and dating pen but this joke will never get old so don't expect him to quit any time soon. a twin in being completely unable to admit when something's wrong, the two of them can keep up these rooftop meetups, booze and admissions and it's a good friendship to have tbh

Noctis Lucis Caelum
kittycaterer
prompto's boyfriend and a pretty good friend in his own right, no matter how worried dante originally was about being forgotten once he got better. a guy of poor health, but usually up for some fun and some trouble if dante can scare something up which he can definitely appreciate

Ignis Scientia
amities
ok so they don't have cr yet but lbr it's just a matter of time ok

May Sfondi ⚓ May
me_matey
loud and proud and punches people into the ground, seems to appreciate dante's sense of humor and the two of them are bros

Ami Aihara ♈ Aradia Megido
livingdeadgirl
a good kid with a pretty good sense of humor, the two of them don't run in the same circles but he's never upset to see her around (especially when she shoots one of her one-liners, seriously kid that wit is gold)

Dave Strider
parodeity
basically a carbon copy of that other blond stri kid look i don't even know which one of them came first don't ask me this he's not as weirdly pretentious as dirk though he's just kind of a shitpost extraordinaire
he loses points for suggesting noah see if timcanpy would bite dante though
* originally met dave when his father played a joint concert with mrs strider 4 years ago

Alison Sobeck ⊕ Aloy
shieldweaver
pretty cool but a little straitlaced, come on als let him show you the world shining shimmering wait wrong canon
dante's glad to see she's back on the network and wants to drag her out on some adventures, she seems like she'd have some fun

Ayano Tateyama
kagepuro
GUILT
a sweet girl that was dragged into a hell that he created and tortured and he will never get those screams out of his head, ever

Elliot Craig
fiddlestick
a guy that dante knew when they were kids that's somehow come back to find him again. elliot hasn't changed much from when the two of them were kids, while dante's changed almost beyond recognition, and he really doesn't know how to deal with this remnant of his past coming back. in spite of being a pushover getting some magic has seemed to strengthen him a little bit

Matt Murdock
blessmefather
they say that justice is blind and they've got no idea how right they are... someone dante's sparred with at fight practices. he's got a lot of respect for matt for pushing himself the way he does, and there's a similarity between the two of them in their apparent ability to fight blinded

James Barnes
frostythehitman
an overdramatic angstlord but with all the shit retrospec's thrown at him he probably would be too tbqh
fought a bear with him and leo so he can't be all bad and the boy can't hold his booze so there's some entertainment to be had there for sure

Neferti 🐈 Cleo Ritter
comeknightfall
broke his ribs and broke his arm and honestly it would've been pretty badass if the circumstances hadn't been so bad, also she's got a tail and that's... that's definitely a thing

Tatsuo Kihara 🖳 Ikuo Ryuuzaki
ikuo
a good guy. things between them have gotten a little bit ???? after the events of october, but dante still trusts him to an extent and bad shit happens, you know?

Leo Valdez
commandertoolbelt
for some reason he likes to try and drag dante but joke's on him bc dante was in ur head all month he knows about your emotions buddy HE KNOWS

Minako Arisato
complementing
so somehow they went from her being pissed at him because of ghost hunters to her checking in on him to make sure things are okay???? he's so confused by this but okay he'll just wait for the next time he pisses her off, it's bound to happen with how close she is to sora

Minato Arisato
compendiem
what the fuck minato
also recognized a little too quickly his guilt when it comes to malik, don't look through him like that you don't know shit

Souji Seta
tarotcards
1/2 the twin that dante probably knows a little bit better, souji's the type of guy that'll take his shitposting self and turn it right back around but goddamn if that doesn't have Consequences sometimes thanks bro what a pal

Yu Narukami
covenantal
2/2 look all i'm saying is that a cat-print speedo is not the kind of thing normal people put on their birthday wishlists okay

Naoto Shirogane
truedetective
HE IS NOT A HOOLIGAN WOW just because he likes to drink and to drink a lot and to live it up partying with other people who are also drinking......... but he has never been responsible for destruction of public or private property and he's not hurting anyone else so WHAT'S YOUR DEAL :T

Baren Kaiyou 💩 Baren Kumou
crudest
💩

Ben Solo/Ren Lowe 💀 Kylo Ren
lostapprentice
this guy needs to get the stick out of his ass, like holy shit what is his deal, get a grip, relax, take a smoke, it'll be fine my guy

Sorey Doushi
openhanded
dude he knows what it's like to think you're not enough but get over yourself if you're gonna lead people into the fray you've gotta be willing to step up and lead, quit making excuses and get the hell to work let's go time to learn what you're really made of

Garfield Logan 🐾 Beast Boy
thebeastwithout
sometimes it's hard to remember that half of them are still kids... gar makes that point more than obvious i mean for REAL how many times does he have to tell you that axe is not a good deodorant or body spray and it's ESPECIALLY not a good replacement for showers holy shit rip group 3's noses

Kiyomitsu Kashuu
sharplydressed
at first he was all fashion and rose petals but underneath he's a harsh loudmouth that'll threaten to burn your clothes if he thinks they aren't up to snuff enough, needless to say dante likes him

Yamato no Kami Yasuada
okitactless
the boyfriend kiyo was ranting about with the terrible fashion sense. a little shit if dante's any judge, but that's not a bad thing in the slightest

Bakhura Farouk ☥ Dark Bakura
haura
on the one hand dante doesn't know what to do with bakhura since the two of them were counterweighting each other in malik's funhouse horror show and that's not a fun memory to revisit, but on the other he doesn't seem like he's that bad a guy in the end... he seems like he actively wants to help but just doesn't know how and if dante can help, he's gonna

Malik Ishtar
godcards
on the one hand malik shanked him multiple times with his own dagger
on the other hand he definitely deserved it and now his life's been fucked over by it so yeah, dante feels for the guy

DROPPED CR

Sarah Ariana Vittoria de Alessandro † Garnet Til Alexandros XVII
uncagedbird
head over heels for her and he doesn't care if the rest of the world finds out. ♥ he thinks that ari is one of the most incredible people he's ever met, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that she's happy, even if it means one day letting her go.

Aria Rylan 💧 Aqua
ghostdrives
quiet, but determined. she wasn't willing to take his lies about being fine after everything that had happened in august but can you really blame her it's not like he was that hard to see through tbqh

Marina Hartmann ♡ Kairi
princessofheart
adventure adventure adventure--his one regret is that they didn't get to know each other that well before she lost access to the app

recusancy
a hard-ass beat cop desk jockey that thinks the rest of the world should get in line according to his orders. yeah, good luck with that, dude.

Noah Gabranth ♟ Gabranth
judicatus
chief dog-walker at the precinct, slammed into an interrogation cell after dante pissed off one of the cops enough to flip a table that was a dramatic entrance dude are you sure you weren't an actor in another life

Fynn Rygdea
rygdea
ardyn's short-tempered little brother--annoying, but the two of them have made a pact to protect each other's bros so dante's willing to work with him if it means someone else watching out for prompto. bonding over alcohol?? too bad he's a cop and cares if dante's drinking underage

Juzo Sakakura
outpunch
hot-blooded and hot-tempered, someone dante likes to needle man oh man is it fun to push this guy's buttons he means come on he got him to flip a table out of frustration once

Dirk Strider
splinten
don't get him started, just don't, dirk will talk your ear off with these weird theories about how everything you do is falling into the trap of humanity and how they're going to break that cycle and it's. a thing???? but he also has enough spontaneity (read: love for his siblings to be bullied into it) to do things like try parkouring up trick stairs and be thrown into a wall as a result so. you take the good with the bad
* originally met dirk when his father played a joint concert with mrs strider 4 years ago

Jade Wolf ⚯ Jade Harley
rhapsodeity
takes jokes way too seriously and then refuses to let go of them but hey we're all young and stupid at some point right???? she'll grow out of it probably

Jake English
potentite
sounds like he's starring in some campy-ass movie set in the 1800s with all his "gadzooks" and "whippersnappers" honestly what the hell dude

Karkat Vantas
alienates
actually wrote a blog post about how much he hated dante, then turned around and actually was pretty cool and trying to help him out? this kid's a mess but it's the type of mess he can appreciate

Anastasia "Anya" Vasilieva
constellates
potentially the purest soul he's ever met and someone who sees through him way too fucking easily. even if he doesn't realize it he looks at anya a little bit like he might a younger sibling--she's important as hell to him and he'd walk through hell if he needed to to save her

Chloe Bouchard
true_noir

the wild child livin' it up livin' fast calm it down sister the world keeps on spinning and you don't have to make it run

Emil Västerström
frisyr
a poor, poor soul that has made the terrible decision of becoming friends with dante, has anybody managed to talk him out of that yet? doesn't walk the walk or talk the talk but he tries pretty damn hard and dante can respect that

Mikleo Lefay
fashioneebo
lives with sorey, makes out with him sometimes. oddly obsessed with the musical cats. also dante once stole him away from his boyfriend to dance with him, did anybody get some video of that

Yuuko Kanoe
ghostories
seems really lonely, even though she's got a life of her own too. he can understand that feeling so he's more than willing to go on adventures with her and feed her ponytail to chocobos i mean what

Akira Midousuji

weird, but smart. and that's about all there is to say about that

Seto Kaiba
crushcard

echoes
echo i:
The memory of stumbling through total darkness. Specifically, a voice calling to him: “Riku, can you hear me? I’ll be there soon.” “I’ve been talking to you all along. But my words were hindered by the darkness in your heart.”

echo ii, december 29: Memory of a man swathed in red bandages and how insistent he was that human-esque Nobodies were never meant to exist. It's something that's come up more than a few times, he thinks...

echo iii, december 29: Knowledge of Nobodies and how they're created. He remembers they're half of one coin, but he doesn't remember that a Heartless is created at the same time yet.

echo iv, december 29: Organization XIII. A group of Nobodies that, for some reason he doesn't remember, he was keeping tabs on. They definitely weren't his friends, that's for sure.

echo v, december 29: 1:12 - 1:24. Axel sweeping in to save the day to the surprise of the others there, though Riku doesn't remember that it's Sora that he saved, or that Axel corrected Mr Salt-n-Pepper with "The name's Lea."

echo vi, december 30 (tier 2 echo): a) Knowledge of Heartless and how they're created. He now remembers the connection between them and the Nobodies.
b) Creation of Anti-Sora, a humanoid-shaped Heartless that Riku once controlled. It has no real purpose or direction and just kind of wanders around and melts in and out of the floor.

echo vii, december 30: 7:10 - 7:47. “The Heartless obey me now, Sora. Now I have nothing to fear.” Riku also remembers that he was the one that created Anti-Sora in the first place.

echo viii, december 30: KEYBLADE... KEYBLADE... A weapon only those with true strength of heart can wield, the only weapon that can defeat the Heartless and release the captive heart within.

echo ix, february 1: Dante finally regains the ability to control Anti-Sora!

echo x, february 14: Kingdom Hearts, the heart of all worlds, a conglomeration of all free hearts without a body. Dante remembers what it is.

echo xi, february 14 (tier 2 echo): a) Working against Organization XIII to prevent them from achieving their ultimate goal of creating Kingdom Hearts.
b) The black coat he wore when he was on this mission, to prevent them from sensing him.

echo xii, march 9 (tier 2 echo): 7:29 - 9:15, the memory of meeting a stranger on the play islands when he was a child, and talking about the outside worlds. He wanted to leave the islands to become a stronger person, so he could protect his friends.
b) 11:01 - 12:32, the memory of, years later, working with his two friends to build a raft that would allow him to leave the islands and do just that.

echo xiii, march 9: The memory of enemies that might drop items that would help restore one's health or magic powers, or money or items if waled on for long enough.

echo xiv, march 23: Dante's hair is now silver!

IC Information:
Name:
Preincarnation: Riku | Reincarnation: Dante Rantanen
Canon and medium: Kingdom Hearts
Age: Preincarnated, 16/17; in this world, 18.
Preincarnation Species: Human
Preincarnation Appearance: Appearance as of the end of KH2; in KH3DS he pretty much looks the same, but with the haircut of his dream-world model.
Any differences: Riku’s hair is still going to be pretty pale, but it’s white-blond, rather than silver-white. His eyes are more an icy blue than bright turquoise. He looks in general more Nordic than Game Genetics. Otherwise about the same.

Preincarnated History: How about some wiki links?
(Note: In the first game the main bad guy is called Ansem. ...then in KH2 suddenly he wasn't Ansem, suddenly he was a Heartless of this other guy, Xehanort, who had stolen the real Ansem's name, and you've got the fold of Xehanort-Xehanort's Heartless-Xemnas-Ansem-Ansem the Wise going on. For simplicity's sake, I will refer to Xehanort's Heartless as Ansem, as A) this was how he was originally known, B) the real Ansem is always referred to as "Ansem the Wise" anyways, and C) Riku himself still refers to him as Ansem, even in the most recent installments.)
So. To fully understand Riku, we have to go back to when he was five years old. When he was five years old, he met this guy. Baby Riku, apparently having never been taught the fine principles of Stranger Danger, proceeded to talk to said guy about worlds outside of his own, and how he wanted to get out and become stronger so he could “protect the things that matter. You know, like my friends!” The stranger, Terra, performed a short ceremony with Riku that day that would mark him as an eventual Keyblade wielder and give him that opportunity.

Cut to nine years later. Riku and his friends are still stuck on the islands, and Riku’s getting pretty stir-crazy, to the extent that the three of them decide to build a raft and sail away to the outside worlds, because nothing could possibly go wrong with that, right?

(Spoilers everything goes wrong with that.)

The night before they’re supposed to leave, a storm hits the islands—not a natural storm, lightning and thunder and winds, but a storm of Heartless that ultimately devour their world. Riku makes it out all right, helped by a hooded figure to escape, and winds up in Hollow Bastion where he meets the witch Maleficent. He starts looking for Sora and Kairi immediately, certain that they made it off the islands too, but when Maleficent starts manipulating his emotions he winds up falling into darkness. She convinces him that Sora has abandoned him for new friends, and that only she can help him find Kairi. Riku doesn’t trust her entirely (“Silly boy, you’re like a son to me. I only want you to be happy.” “I seriously doubt that.”), but as his choices become more and more limited by his own actions he turns to her more often, her flattery and her power attractive in light of his mounting uncertainty. She builds him up, telling him that he is the true Keyblade master and giving him the ability to control the Heartless—but that only sets him up to fall even deeper into darkness when Sora bests him.

Not knowing what else to do, Riku gives himself to the darkness entirely, thinking it’s the only way he can become strong enough to beat Sora. Instead it makes him the perfect vessel to host the wandering spirit of Ansem, the hooded figure that helped him to escape the islands so long ago. Ansem possesses his body, and shortly thereafter Riku winds up in the realm of darkness, where he wanders until a voice leads him to meet a King. When Sora defeats Ansem in the realm of light, just outside of a pair of doors that link the two realms, the King and Riku help him to close the doors and end the threat to the worlds from the Heartless.

This leaves Riku in darkness. He is separated from the king, but even Riku himself doesn’t know what happened to cause that—all he knows is that next he was waking up, in a place described as “between light and dark,” with a voice telling him to stay asleep. The voice offers him a choice: to sleep, or to take the first steps of a long and painful journey toward the truth. Riku chooses to search for the truth, and is brought to the very bottom basement of Castle Oblivion. As he fights his way upward, at first oblivious to the fact that his friend Sora is doing the same thirteen floors above him, he has to face the fact that the darkness is still in his heart, and that trying to ignore its presence there will only make him lose control of it. Throughout his journey through the castle, Riku accepts the darkness in his heart, acknowledging its presence but refusing to let it control him, continuing to fight its influence even as he uses its power. As he reaches the conclusion of this journey he finds a comatose Sora, his memories (and by extension, his heart) shattered by the ordeals he faced in the castle. Riku decides to go on another journey to help his friend, taking the first step to repairing the rift he opened between the two of them.

This journey leads Riku to Organization XIII, a band of Nobodies. Nobodies are the remnants of hearts; when a Heartless is created, a Nobody is as well. The strongest hearts leave behind human-shaped remnants, who remember everything about their pasts. Riku’s target was the Nobody created from Sora, a boy called Roxas. However his mission was made more difficult by the appearance of a second Nobody called Xion, a blank slate of a puppet created by the Organization, who was siphoning Sora’s memories from Roxas. Riku convinced Xion to give up her memories willingly, so that Sora could become whole again, but Roxas took a little more persuasion: Riku had to fully release all of the dark power in his heart, “even… if it changes me forever.” This trapped him into Ansem’s form, a physical change so complete that Riku started going by Ansem’s name, casting away everything of who he used to be. He continued to work in the shadows as Sora awoke, investigating the Nobodies and doing whatever he could to help his friends without revealing himself to them, ashamed of what he’d done in the past and what he’d become. He even gained a Keyblade of his own, a modification to the blade he’d carried for so long that turned it into a weapon of light. Everything was going well! Until Naminé, Kairi’s Nobody, blew his cover.

Kairi had been kidnapped by a member of Organization XIII, who had planned to use her as leverage against Sora. When Kairi escaped, Saïx came to stop her, only to find himself stopped by Riku’s own appearance. He escaped through a Corridor of Darkness, but when Riku moved to follow him, Kairi called for him to wait, tipped off by Naminé: “You can take it from here, Riku.” Kairi is the first to discover Riku’s new appearance (King Mickey doesn’t count as Mickey knows more about Riku’s journey than even his friends do), and rather than turn away from him for everything he’s done and all the mistakes he’s made, she expresses how glad she is to see him. This is Huge. Riku fights in the light for the rest of the game, first fighting alongside Kairi as they search for Sora and then, shortly after they find him, becoming a full party member. Near the top of the Organization’s castle/base, an explosion results in Riku regaining his normal appearance, discarding the cloak and blindfold he’d been using to block the darkness and returning for good to the light. He and Sora go after the Big Bad, Xemnas, and fight a long dramatic battle. Near the end of this battle Riku gets pretty grievously injured protecting Sora, to the extent that even after they’ve defeated Xemnas he isn’t quite sure he’s going to make it through. (Given how Riku’s acting, admitting to childhood secrets and voice obviously much weaker/less substantial than just before or even during the battle, combined with how Sora’s humoring him and trying to keep him pepped up, it’s not a far stretch to imagine that Riku was actually pretty close to dying, or at the very least thought he was going to.)

But Sora isn’t having any of this, and off he drags Riku (almost literally)! The two of them reach a beach in the realm of darkness and decide that if the world of light is safe, it’s all right for them to be the shadows there. Enter Kairi, whose letter-in-a-bottle to the boys helps open the Door of Light to bring them both home.

Their respite doesn’t last long, though. Very soon after, Riku and Sora are both called up by King Mickey and Master Yen Sid, who want the two of them to take the Mark of Mastery exam, which would give them the ranking of Keyblade Master. To this end they had to dive into the dreams of what are called “sleeping worlds,” worlds that didn’t come back after the Heartless were defeated in the original Kingdom Hearts. They were to find the Keyholes of these sleeping worlds and bring them back into the waking world. However, their enemies had predicted their movements, and Riku finds himself running into both a younger version of Xemnas (Xehanort) and Ansem himself as he proceeds through the worlds. (To be honest Riku isn’t even surprised by this point when Ansem shows up. Given how much he’s fought against him it’s just par for the course by this point.) Once he finishes his journey through the worlds, he winds up in The World That Never Was, where he finds that not only has Sora been taken and put to sleep by their enemies, he’s been moving through Sora’s dreams this entire time, rather than through the dreams of the sleeping worlds.

Their enemies are planning on using Sora as a new vessel for Xehanort’s heart, just as Riku had been for Ansem’s long ago. They’d originally planned on using Riku, but Riku had proven over and over that he wouldn’t fall to the darkness again—so the onus had shifted to his friend. Knowing this, Riku sets out to recover Sora, doing so with the help of a few friends. But even after they’ve rescued Sora, he won’t wake up. Riku plunges back into Sora’s dreams, fighting through the last Nightmares to awaken his heart once more. As the two of them come back into the waking world, Yen Sid bestows the title of Master upon Riku, and the heroes of light begin preparations for their final battle against Xehanort and his various incarnations.

Reincarnated History:
Dante Rantanen was born to famous parents. Well, relatively famous. Famous enough that they met on the performing circuit, a pianist and an opera singer who made magic when the two of them were together, in more ways than one. The two of them became close when they initially did a performance together, continuing to work together both inside and outside of performance halls as well. It was about when Mama Rantanen got back from her second doctor’s appointment that she and Papa Rantanen were told that they’d better be prepared to tie the knot or do something similarly drastic, because what would it mean for their careers otherwise? They chose to get married, but it was a marriage of convenience, and only a few short years after Dante and his twin brother were born, the couple mutually decided to split. Papa Rantanen took one child, Mama Rantanen took the other, and within months Dad Rantanen was married to his new wife, who just so happened to have been his publicist for the past five years. Whoops.

With this new marriage, Dante basically grew up an only child. His parents (he grew up seeing his father’s second wife as his mother, even though he knows she’s technically his stepmother) were loving enough, but not altogether involved in his life. The two of them were frequently absent, whether due to his father playing concerts or his mother working events and taking on clients. As a result, Dante grew up raised mainly by his grandmother, a woman who loved to spoil him rotten. She encouraged him to think for himself and play and explore, and cultivated in him a desire to take care of the people around him. Dante lived with her in a small house near the woods until he was ten years old—at which point his parents realized how little they saw him and how much of his life they were missing. On his tenth birthday, he left his grandmother’s house to travel with them, forced into spending all his time with people he barely knew, who barely knew him.

That year was not fun in the slightest. With his grandmother he’d been able to explore, to follow whatever fancy caught his attention at the moment and to be a silly, lighthearted little boy. With his parents, Dante was expected to behave, to show poise, to appear their dutiful son with all regard for the world and its restraints.

Dante hated it.

Sure, he got to go interesting places—but he never got to explore. Most of the time he saw everything from a car window as they drove between concert hall, or bookstore, or restaurant. If he was sightseeing it was with his tutors, all the light side of the city and the sights you were supposed to see. The Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building—not the road blocked off by statues or the trees covered in crochet, or the river where the new artists’ installation of floating houses made of garbage was drifting by. Phantom of the Opera, not off-Broadway fringe theatre. It was all very white upper-middle-class suburbanite vacation boring. To make matters worse, his parents wanted to bond with him—only instead of that meaning things like going out to games or movies, it meant piano lessons with dad during sound checks, or press events with his mother. (These weren’t so bad, depending. If it was something like a book signing he could hide away with a book of his own until it was time to go; even better were the times he was able to sneak out into the city proper to explore on his own.)

They meant well, but Dante chafed under the sudden attention. As they were usually on the move he never really got a chance to make friends with others of his age, and as the months passed he found himself giving his tutors the slip more and more often, relishing the time alone to explore the different cities. But he couldn’t do it all the time. If he disappeared too often, that would be the end of that.

They visited his grandmother at Christmas. “Look at you, my well-traveled boy!” she’d crow, holding him to her, but he could detect the hint of sadness to her voice.

That was how the next few years went: constantly on the move, visiting his grandmother for holidays and birthdays if they were lucky. As he grew Dante retained his love of exploring each new city they came across (when he could get the opportunity), but he came to also enjoy the status his parents’ stations afforded him. He liked being treated like a little adult, able to accompany them to concerts or theatre or opera, able to speak to adults who, if they didn’t take him seriously, at least let him speak as though they did. Where before he had been an innocent little boy with an ornery streak, Dante grew into a self-confident (if not downright cocky) young man with the world at his fingertips. His parents would buy him anything he wanted, so long as he was still keeping face, and Dante grew still bolder, skipping out on his tutors and other obligations in search of other, more interesting pursuits.

When Dante was fifteen, they sent him back to live with his grandmother again.

Maybe it was because he’d skipped out one too many times to wander around the city on his own. He’d made a handful of friends online and was meeting them in person whenever they happened to be around. It wasn’t any big deal. Maybe it was because he’d hit his rebellious teenage years and was chafing again at his short leash, and though he tried not to he couldn’t help but argue with his parents when they protested his going out alone with kids he’d only just met. Maybe it was because one night he snuck out to hang out with his new “friends” and the lot of them were caught up transporting a number of art pieces that had been recently stolen from the downtown galleries. (Dante was able to claim ignorance, and his parents paid well to make sure the story never broke.)

Whatever the case, his parents were convinced that it was their nomadic lifestyle that was making their son grow up too fast, and in all the wrong ways. So it was back to grandmother’s house with you, my boy!

Dante didn’t mind as much as he’d expected to. His relationship with his grandmother was still good, and after she’d given him a stern look and demanded to hear his explanation for his behavior, she forgave him. He settled back into his life with her, his experiences over the past five years giving him both allure and popularity at the high school he enrolled in. Dante soaked it all up. “Golden boy” was a familiar role for him to play, and he liked the feeling of the rest of the world looking up to him.

But everything changed when the fire nation attacked his grandmother died.

She hadn’t even seemed sick. She’d been fit as a fiddle, laughing the night before as he’d told her about extra-curriculars at school, lively and asking all the right questions and reacting at the right moments. Then the next morning he woke up, and when she wasn’t already up and puttering about…

It was a stroke, they said, a stroke in the middle of the night. There was nothing that could have been done. Dante was in such a state of shock that he didn’t even protest when his parents packed him back up to leave with them. But this time, thinking the three of them needed to be a family, they moved to Locke City, into a large, drafty house with “character” (which was apparently code for old, dark, and creaky).

This lasted about a year and a half. Right after Dante’s graduation from high school, his parents were off again, promising to check in on him on the weekends and make sure everything was still functioning. As could only be expected though, this petered out pretty quickly—Dante only really sees them through Skype, which he slogs through once a month, a way to make them feel as though they’re still involved in his life.

First Echo: Exploring the mines when his phone, which he was using for light, died. As he tried to keep going through the tunnels, he remembered stumbling through the darkness once before. This Echo leaves him with only a few snatches of what was said back then (“Riku, can you hear me? I’ll be there soon.” And “I’ve been talking to you all along. But my words were hindered by the darkness in your heart.”), as well as a string of numbers that won’t leave his mind…

Preincarnation Personality:
Riku is a boy that used to be on top of the world.

Then he fell off.

Growing up, Riku was very much the king of his castle. It was a well-known fact that he was The Best—he could run the fastest, he could jump the highest, he could take on three people at once and beat them all in mock combat. Riku was the instigator, the one with the plan; he was the one everybody looked to when they didn’t know what to do next. Which was fine by Riku, because he always had an answer. He always had a plan.

As you might expect, this led to Riku becoming a fairly cocky boy. He was in control of every situation—until suddenly, he wasn’t. After the fall of Destiny Islands, Riku made a few boneheaded choices rooted entirely in his desire to be in control: regaining that sense of control by finding his friends was his main goal, and he did whatever was necessary to achieve it, in spite of the morality of his actions (see: kidnapping Jasmine). Eventually, he paid dearly for it.

And that’s a pretty common theme for Riku: he doesn’t do anything halfway. He commits himself to his decisions mind, body, and soul, no matter where that leads him. He’s willing to throw entire worlds into darkness (along with himself) to save Kairi, and to save Sora he not only plunges himself back into the darkness, but completely revokes the right of two Nobodies to exist along the way. Riku’s willpower is one of his most defining traits: if he sets his mind to something, he goes after that with everything he has. Unfortunately, this leads to him being very single-minded, to the extent that he doesn’t always remember to keep others in the loop. He’ll see something needing done and go after it without a word to anyone else—Riku cherishes his friends above all else but is very much a loner. He’s used to being on his own, if not by nature then by circumstance: after leaving Destiny Islands at age 15 he spent the next two years largely working alone, even if other hands guided his movements. After his initial mistakes he took his solitariness as a sort of both consequence and blessing—atonement for his misdeeds and a way to avoid facing those he felt he’d disappointed.

Riku is a perfectionist. Keeping his unequivocal status as The Best on the islands meant he had to continually show everybody else up. It meant not being able to fail. Failure hits Riku hard, and he tries his hardest not to let anyone see him struggling. It’s a large part of why he spent so long after the events of Kingdom Hearts hiding away; Riku knows how badly he messed up and he doesn’t think he can face anyone because of it. When Kairi lowers his hood and he is revealed to her in Ansem’s form, he can’t meet her eyes—he’s afraid of finding rejection there. Screwing up is bad enough. Being rejected by one of his closest friends, which is almost what he expected to happen, would have been a million times worse.

Riku’s friends are the most important things in all the worlds to him. He makes acquaintances with ease, but it takes a while to become close friends with Riku. However as soon as you reach that level, the boy is one of the most loyal friends you could ever have. Riku will do Whatever It Takes to protect his friends. He will put himself in danger’s way without a second thought, and he will wreak unholy hell on anyone that gets in his way. In the first Kingdom Hearts, his sheer force of will is strong enough that he is actually able to fight back against Ansem’s possession of his body—Riku is the only person shown in the series to have been able to accomplish this feat, and he did it the moment it looked like Ansem was going to use him to attack his friends. “You won’t use me for this,” he said, fighting back and detaining Ansem long enough to ensure he wouldn’t be able to hurt Kairi.

His determination to protect his friends rolls straight back into his loner personality: Riku wants to be as strong as he can possibly be so that he can protect the people around him, and he doesn’t want to have to put anybody else in danger for his sake. Riku is all about being able to take care of himself; just before heading into the final basement of Castle Oblivion he tells King Mickey “I’ve gotta face [Ansem] alone. […] There’s no point in doing this if I can’t do it on my own.” He’s very focused on strength and the power gained by being strong; at first, he was mostly focused on physical and mental strength, but he’s since learned what it means to have a strong heart, too.

Competition was once a driving force in Riku’s life, and even though it’s not the same motivator that it once was, it’s still a large part of who he is. Riku was used to competition on the islands, running and jumping and fighting, and it’s what drove him to become as good as he is today. His competitive nature was a secondary influence throughout the events of the first game. While at first he was driven solely by his loss of control, as things between him and Sora deteriorated he became more and more determined to show that he was better than Sora, to find Kairi before Sora could, to prove that he was more worthy to carry a Keyblade than Sora was. Although after he falls into darkness, that facet of him fades (it’s tough to compete when there’s nobody to compete against), it still reappears from time to time: “Come on, Sora. I thought you were stronger than that,” he calls at the end of the first game, trying to goad Sora into not giving in to the darkness. A year later, he repeats that same line as he squares off against Roxas, speaking to the memories Roxas holds. (The fact that Roxas, without missing a beat, snaps back with what is indisputably a Sora Response—“Huh? Get real! Look which one of us is winning.”—speaks to how deep the competitive streak between the two boys ran.) Any more Riku doesn’t feel the same desire to show off and prove his superiority the same way that he once did, but he still finds it hard to back down from a challenge.

Riku today has changed a lot from the cocky, arrogant boy he was on the islands. Throughout everything that’s happened since the original storm hit Destiny Islands, he’s been knocked down numerous times, had to rebuild himself almost entirely from scratch. He’s come face-to-face with his own morality, and realized how much he was found wanting. With the shadow remnants of Ansem’s spirit living on in his heart, Riku’s had to examine every decision he ever made and remake those decisions time and time again, constantly pushing past the whispers of doubt and promises that one day he’d fall to darkness again. He’s had to dig himself out of his own grave, and with that has come a sense of seriousness and humility. He’s more willing to accept his own faults, to look critically at himself and to try and improve himself. Where before Riku worked tirelessly to repair the damage he’d caused, hoping to atone for his mistakes, Riku now works just as hard because he knows he can do the right thing. He’s seen the darker side of the mirror, and he wants to stop the darkness in its tracks before it can drag the rest of the worlds into that pit he lived in for so long. Riku’s goals aren’t any less daunting, and he’ll still go after them with everything he has, but there’s no longer the conflict in his heart that once ruled him. For now, he’s reached balance.

(It’s worth noting though that even if Riku’s a lot more serious and mature than he started out the games, he’s still retained a good deal of his snarky nature. It just kind of slips out—at The World That Never Was, during a Serious Conversation about why Riku was hiding himself from everybody else, Sora asks him why he tried to do so much on his own when he’s got all these friends to help him out. It would be heartwarming, if not for Riku’s smirk and response: “I’ll tell you why. ‘Cause I’m not a total sap like you!”

Old habits die hard.)

Any differences:
The biggest change to Riku’s personality is that he’s never been burned by his arrogance. At least, not to the extent that he was burned by it in the original canon. His preincarnation pretty much lost his heart to the darkness and came face-to-face with not only his hubris but his mortality (and morality). In this incarnation the worst it’s done is lose him a few friends. In fact, his self-assuredness has actually helped more than hinder him—when he traveled with his parents, his air of confidence made him an instant hit with most people he met. So this Riku is in no way as contrite as his preincarnation. In fact, he’s kind of a jerk.

Canon Riku is an introvert, but this incarnation of him is even more so. Being uprooted at ten and never staying in the same place more than a couple months at a time didn’t exactly leave much time for making meaningful friendships. Even after he moved back to his grandmother’s, he only had a couple years before being uprooted again for Locke City. This has left him good at meeting people, but bad at forming long-lasting relationships. It’s not worth putting in the effort when he doesn’t know how much longer he’ll be around.

This also means that Riku isn’t moved by people as he once was. Off the top of his head there’s no one he would lay down his life for, and while he’ll joke around with others, he doesn’t expect anybody else to have his back either. Riku is a one-man show, and all his emotions are perfectly contained (at least, he thinks so). Anything that doesn’t mesh with the image he’s trying to project is balled up and shoved into the deepest corners of his mind, where he doesn’t have to deal with them.

Overall this version of Riku is a lot less intense than his preincarnation was. He’s not got a chip on his shoulder or something to prove to the rest of the world, and he doesn’t feel like he needs to go out of his way for any real reason. He’s pretty content to go with the flow, so long as the flow is headed in the direction he wants, at which point he’ll just saunter off and do his own thing without preamble or permission.

Abilities:
Okay, so Riku is a Kingdom Hearts character which basically means he’s got a stupid amount of “abilities” which are basically different specialized attacks. A full list (of at least his abilities from Dream Drop Distance) is located here, but as that’s a pretty sizable laundry list, here’re the highlights:
  • KEYBLADE. KEEEEEYBLAAAAAAAADE. Basically a shiny blade that functions as a deux ex machina when it comes to anything ever that can be locked or closed. (No seriously, apparently you can awaken people from comas with this thing.)  (Okay okay so it's by using the blade's empathetic nature to resonate with that person's heart but YOU GET MY DRIFT.) As such, it's able to open almost any lock it comes up against, from that lock keeping your diary from being read to the locks that keep the various worlds separate from one another.
    • Rustproof, dustproof, tarnishproof, bluntproof... basically doesn't require much upkeep, as it isn’t ever kept in the open when it isn’t being used. When the Keyblade is dismissed it goes back to rest in the wielder’s heart—it’s pretty much an extension of his own heart, as without a strong heart you can’t wield the power of a Keyblade, and Keyblades normally aren’t handed off; the power to wield or create one is passed on from those who came before.
      • Seriously, entirely bluntproof. They’ve been used to cut through skyscrapers before.
    • Can use Keychains to change the overall appearance and (to an extent) its capabilities.
  • General swordplay/combat skills. Riku is very much a lightning bruiser; he fights one-handedly and hits hard and fast. He's able to take out Xion with a single well-placed hit to her lower back, so in addition to swordfighting he's got some experience in hand-to-hand combat as well.
  • Acrobatics/movement. Some form of dance training. Nobody will ever convince me otherwise.
    • Also he can do things like one-handed back handsprings while still wielding his weapon against an enemy.
    • Equipped with KH physics, which means No Fall Damage and Ridiculously High Jumping. (In 3DS Riku starts out with a relatively "reasonable"  jump of about head-height. Then with High Jump he's able to clear semis. Add in Doubleflight (basically double jump), and suddenly he's able to come level with second floor windows. SURPRISE!)
  • DARKNESS. Riku can do all sorts of things with it—he can sense it on people, he can utilize it as a tool to help him move faster, he can see through it no matter how dark the world around him, and he can't be harmed by it. Most of the dark-infused abilities he has are on the ability list above, but the big ones would be Shadow Roll, Shadow Slide, Dark Aura, Counter Aura, Dark Firaga, and Dark Splicer.
  • Magic. Riku’s not as big a magic user, but he’s got access to the full range of spells, which include elemental (fire/blizzard/lightning/wind/dark in varying levels), healing (cure/esuna), and status (blind/poison/mini/bind/slow/stop/sleep).
Roleplay Sample - Third Person:
It’s curiosity that brings him to the mines, curiosity and the thrill that only comes from doing something to break the monotony of day-to-day life. Dante doesn’t consider himself stupid, not by a long shot, but there’s a definite voice in the back of his mind muttering darkly about how moronic this idea of his is, and how he should just turn back now because doesn’t he remember how the mines collapsed just a few short months ago?

Of course he does. He’d have to be an idiot to have forgotten. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to turn back. If he let himself be scared away by just the possibility of something going wrong, he’d never leave his house! He’s put off visiting the mines for several months already. He’s not turning back now.

But when his cell phone dies (…whoops), taking away his main source of light, it isn’t curiosity that drives him to continue exploring anyways. That? That might be the moronic part of him.

Whatever it is, Dante doesn’t plan on wimping out. He glances behind him (or where he thinks is behind him; he came out at night and the tunnels are dark), then shrugs and presses on. He’s got a pack of matches in his back pocket. Whenever he finds something worth looking at, he can use them. He’ll just have to keep careful track of where he’s headed.

But it’s when he starts back down the tunnel, absently reaching out for the wall every so often to keep his bearings, that he feels the unpleasant prickling at the back of his mind. Slowly he comes to a halt, concentrating on the sensation. It feels almost like…

Before the thought can complete itself, it happens. Dante gasps as the heartbeat echoes through him, feeling for an instant as though he is nothing at all as the moment freezes. He grabs at his chest, but just as soon as it begins it’s over, and everything goes back to normal.

It felt like déjà vu.

“Riku, can you hear me? I’ll be there soon.”

The words resound in his mind, bringing with them the memory of a similar darkness, with a seemingly endless road disappearing into it. Dante frowns, trying to place it. And whose voice is that…?

“I’ve been talking to you all along. But my words were hindered by the darkness in your heart.”

He pauses. That hadn’t—no. No way it was in answer to a question he hadn’t even asked aloud. “Fine, fine, I get it. I’m going back,” he decides, throwing his hands up. He’s going to go home, and he’ll go to bed and get some sleep, and all of this will just be one weird experience of what the fuck that he can chalk up to it being stupid-o’clock in the morning.

And in the morning, phone fully charged and only one match out of his pack missing, he mostly believes it. Or, he would if he could just get those damn numbers out of his mind.

Roleplay Sample - Network:
[It’s during his cursory skype call with his parents that Dante accesses the network for the first time, typing the numbers in while he’s got no other escape. He can’t help the look of surprise that crosses his face when the network appears before him, but they either don’t notice or don’t question, and he doesn’t offer any information as to what’s distracting him the rest of the call.

But his parents do try to keep involved in his life, and it’s almost a full half-hour later before Dante finally disconnects. By this point he’s read enough. He flexes his fingers over the keyboard, half-habit, half-hesitation, then types into what he feels like must be the abyss, but appears to be much less expansive.
]

Numbers, huh? Numbers, aliens, gardeners, and conspiracies.

You know, if you’re trying to convince people that all of this is for real, you’re doing a piss-poor job of it. Whatever happened to easing into it, instead of throwing newcomers into the deep end?

[His text sounds a lot more casual than he really is. Dante doesn’t necessarily believe all this nonsense about the Secret Numbers Club and all that, but damn if it isn’t an intricate piece of work.

He pauses before adding anything more. Is he really planning on drinking this kool-aid?

…Shit. He wasn’t going to ask. But he read the FAQ posts a little more carefully than he did when he was skimming while skyping, and it’s been niggling at him for some reason. He’s going to ask.

Has anyone found out what happens if a Vermini infects one of… you guys?

(And a short thread from the test-drive meme!)

Any Questions? Iiiiiiii think I'm pretty good!
