[Coincidentally, that happens to be one of the exact squares on his card! Dante takes a moment to try and think of something mundane that he's never shared with anyone before. Hmm...]

Once when I was thirteen I decided I was going to leave my parents and go live with my mom. I got all the way to the airport before I realized it wasn't going to work.

[ there's a slight pause before he says anything, because he sounds almost reluctant to admit it, himself. ]

I suppose so, there were times I wanted to leave the orphanage on my own, but I decided against it because I was a child; I had nothing, so I figured my best chances were actually to get adopted by a family with means of some sort.

I was dealt a decent hand, even if it meant being halfway around the world from Japan. At least my brother and I were adopted together. We're not on the streets. I should be thankful for that.

[ not that he would have allowed them being adopted separately? there's just some lines you don't cross. ]

Retrospec is just a minor inconvenient blip on the radar. Minor, but still sufficiently annoying.

[Because most people don't just decide they're going to get themselves adopted by rich people, much less actually make it happen somehow. What the fuck?]

So an orphan kid from Japan gets himself and his brother adopted by a rich family and land in the lap of luxury, huh?

[ unless your name happens to be Seto Kaiba??? he's always known what he's wanted, especially from a young age, and he's opportunistic enough to take advantage of it and game the system that way.

he does sound vaguely amused at how Dante's putting it though, mostly because he's never actually thought of it that way. ]

You're going to have to be at least somewhat well off if you're going to adopt two kids at once, right. It's just a matter of impressing the right couple and making them want to adopt you.

It's not like I coerced them into doing it.

[Whoops, sorry Kaiba. You hit a sore spot: Kaiba managed to endear himself enough to two people enough that they took both him and his brother in together. Dante's never been able to endear himself enough to his own father to get him to give him the time of day.]

mostly because he does the same thing to try and deflect heavy threads of conversation, so he can tell that this is veering towards that direction. he won't ask, in that case.

there's a slight pause when he glances at the screen of his phone - sure enough, the square is now blackened out. good enough, he supposes. ]

[ another short, awkward pause. ]

Whatever. Dante tosses his phone and headphones back to his nightstand, flopping back down and dragging the covers up.
