What the hell is the prof's brother calling him about...? Dante's frowning, but he'll go ahead and he'll give Fynn a call back a couple hours after Fynn's initial message.]
Looks like you got the right number. [His voice isn't outright hostile, but there's definitely a sense of wariness to his words.] What's going on?
[At first, Fynn was more than content about not hearing a response from Dante. After all, that means he doesn't have to apologize for anything if he accidentally called the wrong number. So, for the first few hours, Fynn didn't bother to think about it. He continued with his day and enjoyed this little bit of r&r without having to don the uniform.
He did a little bit of shopping, spend some of the day just on his phone, got his precious Michiyo a decent tune up and even hit the bar briefly to chat with a few friends. It wasn't until much later that he received a phone call and by then, Fynn nearly forgot he made the attempt at all.
That is until he heard Dante's voice.]
Dante?
[His mind goes blank for a second. Oh, crap. Here we go. He can already hear the slight wariness in the kid's tone. It's the same damn tone Dante took up with him during the interrogation, that slight bit of haughtiness mixed in with general unfriendliness. Fynn knows that tone well.]
Ah, nothing. Nothing. Just thought I should....at least give you a call after hearing how you---[Pause. Just how is he going to go about this? This kind of stuff is above Fynn, honestly. Not his cup of tea but it's too late to backout now.]
...Thanks for protecting my brother, okay? I heard about it from Togusa.
[And she'll give him a jab to the ribs for his trouble. Not enough to hurt him, of course, but enough that she hopes he'll think about what a lame joke that was. Still, it doesn't keep the smile from creeping up her face.]
But... I guess that would be one way to make sure we'd never be alone.
[Congratulations, Fynn! You've taken Dante by surprise, and he's not even trying to hide it in his voice. Protecting Ardyn...? When had he done tha--oh. Ohh, he probably means the tunnels, with the spiders.
Is Togusa just trying to make him look good here or something? In Dante's opinion he hadn't done that much, he'd just killed a couple spiders and covered their retreat. It's not that big a deal...]
Whatever. It's not like Togusa couldn't have handled all those spiders on his own.
Besides, the prof was the one that invited me to go with them in the first place. Like I was really gonna let him bloody up my car getting back out of there.
so what was the juicy part? and where WAS all of this?
[Being passed out on the floor...? That's definitely not something he remembers, though by its very nature Dante guesses he wouldn't remember it... still, nothing he's remembered so far has anything to do with a scenario where he'd pass out--in fact, from everything he remembers, passing out sounds like a pretty bad idea!]
[Yep, just like Fynn thought. He totally regrets ever calling this brat. Give him a minute to rein back the anger here. He can't stand that tsun and broody nonsense. Just makes his ass itch.]
...Right. In any case, thank you nonetheless. Togusa and Ardyn needed your help and you did well.
[There's a small laugh from Dante as she jabs him in the ribs. He knows/i> it was a stupid joke. But it was worth it to see the little smile that comes to her face, to know that even for a second he was able to push away the waves of heartbreak and sadness.]
What would be, you being into guys? I don't think that's something you can just decide to change.
[He really was about to hang up on Dante when he started with that whole "I don't need your validation--" bit. However, by the grace of whatever benevolent deity, Fynn stays on the line long enough to hesr the following.]
Good, cause not even I can keep an eye on Ardyn all the time. [He chuckles slightly. As much as Ardyn claims that Fynn is a handful, it's actually the other way around.] If he gets another of those hair brain schemes, make sure he doesn't end up dead. Okay? Not an order or anything just...a mild request.
[He's smiling somewhat now despite walking on metaphoric eggshells here.]
[Those metaphoric eggshells go both ways. But honestly, Fynn's request is something he'd do anyways, so it's not like he's going to lose out if Fynn decides to get all pissy and refuse him here.]
I'll keep my eye on the prof, and you keep one of yours on Prompto, if you can. He's just as bad.
[Ignoring entirely that as of late, he's been one of the common factors in some of those bad decisions...]
A deal? [For the love of it all, what the hell is Dante doing? Fynn bites his tongue and forces himself to just listen for once. He has a bad habit of just reacting first and listening later.] Oh, Prompto?
[Dante seems to won his attention with that.]
Yeah, sure. I don't mind looking out for our friendly neighborhood photographer. He's a nice guy.
Yeah, we met back when all this started going down. [And Fynn might notice now that almost all of the tones that make Dante such a cocky little shit have gone out of his voice. It seems he's being sincere, for once.]
And by this point, he's my brother. [By blood, even.] So I wanna make sure he's safe, too.
What? No. That's not something I'd want to change even if I could.
[Her arms wrap around his waist, pulling herself tight against his side. The feeling is different, but the warmth is there. That's good enough for now.]
Besides, I'm pretty sure what we're doing right now confirms that I'm gay.
[It's that sincerity that makes him smile some. Finally, he's starting to understand this brat.]
Then you and I have a deal. I'll keep your bro safe and I you keep mine safe. Deal?
[Fynn chuckles quietly to himself as he leans against the cushions on the sofa. He's over at Ardyn's place now about to fix up some food but he's tempted to make something nice for Ardyn and him.]
Too bad we can't shake on this over pizza or something.
